Ryder Cup 2020 Format and Teams

The 2020 Ryder Cup will be played from the 25th of September 2020 to the 27th of September 2020. The venue that has been chosen to host the 43rd edition of the Ryder Cup will be the Whistling Straits, in Kohler, Wisconsin in the United States. Team Europe is the defending champions of the tournament, they won the with a score of 171/2 -101/2 against team USA at the Le Golf National in the year 2018.

Due to the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic, a lot of the sporting events, including a number of golf tours are postponing their events. Some of them have also canceled the events. Of this one major golf tour has been dropped off the calendar and another one is being postponed to a date in November.  The Ryder will be held just 5 days after the final round of the U.S.Open which has also been rescheduled.

The Ryder Cup Format

The Ryder Cup is a match play tournament and for every match won the team gets one point.

Below is the format of the competition.

  • On the first day that is on Friday, the Foursome matches with the alternate shot will be held along with the 4 balls also known as better ball matches.
  • On the second day that is Saturday, there will be 4 fourball matches and 4 foursome matches.
  • On the 3rd and final day that is on Sunday, there will be 12 solo matches will be held.

On the first two days, the captain will make the decision of which one will be played in the morning and which one will be played in the afternoon.

Altogether 28 points are there to be won, a minimum of 141/2 points are needed to be scored to become the Ryder Cup winner. and for the defending champions to retain the cup they need to score 14 points.  All the matches that will be played consist of not more than 18 holes.

The Teams Captains

The US team will be led by Steve Stricker. His name was announced on the 20th of February in the year 2019. Sticker is a resident of Edgerton, Wisconsin close to Madison. The first vice-captain was named by Stricker and it is Jim Furyk.  The next two vice-captains were named on the 11th of May 2020 and they were Davis Love III and Zach Johnson.

The European captain is Padraig Harrington. He was named on the 8th of January 2019.  Harrington announced the name of Robert Karlsson as the 1st vice-captain. He announced the name of the 2nd vice-captain in an interview as Luke Donald.  However, it was not a deliberate move.

Selection of the Teams

The US team will consist of the top 8 players from the global ranking. It also includes 4 players picked by the captain.

There will be 4 players from the European points list. it also consists of 4 of the top golfers from the world points list and round-up by the 4 wild cards.
